The Honorable Arnold Schwarzenegger
Governor, State of California
State Capital Building
Sacramento, California 95814
Attention: Sharon Majors-Lewis, Judicial
Appointments Secretary
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:
The Oscar Joel Bryant Foundation (OJB), an
organization that represents over 600 Black police
officers within the Los Angeles Police Department, is
pleased to announce its support of Mr. Gary G. Geuss
in his endeavor to become a Superior Court Judge in
Los Angeles.
As African Americans, we want to envision a
court system where blind justice will always prevail.
But the reality for many African Americans is that
institutional racism has produced racial inequalities
in America as well as the court system. Many of the
criticisms leveled at the court system are replete
with allegations of racial bias and inequity of
treatment for Blacks and other minorities. To change
this prism, we must appoint Bench Officers who are
judiciously fair, impartial, and appropriately
compassionate in their judgment
of others. It is against this background that we take
pride in recommending a judicial officer who we
believe is the best candidate for your consideration.
We have carefully considered Mr. Geuss’
background and believe that he would make an
outstanding judge. His experience as a senior deputy
city attorney since 1989, as well as his judicial
temperament and unquestioned integrity make him an
outstanding judicial candidate. His practice has
involved the defense of the City of Los Angeles, the
Los Angeles City Council, and all other city
departments and employees. He also served as a court
appointed arbitrator for the Los Angeles Municipal
Court.
Mr. Geuss has a plethora of experience in the
practice of law and he possesses the necessary skills
and personal attributes to be successful on the bench.
He will bring honor and respect to the bench, and the
State of California.
Sincerely,
Ronnie Cato, President
